Styling for your session
What you wear to your senior portrait session matters, but not in a stressful, overthink-every-detail kind of way. The right outfits should feel like you on your best day: confident, comfortable, and a little elevated.
Start with what feels like you
If you never wear dresses, your session isn’t the time to suddenly start. If you live in sneakers and oversized tees, we can absolutely style that in a way that still photographs beautifully. The goal isn’t to become someone else, it’s to show off who you already are.
Plan for variety (without overdoing it)

Aim for 2–3 outfits that give you different looks:
- Casual → relaxed, everyday vibe (jeans, tees, sneakers)
- Dressy → something a little more elevated (flowy dress, button-down, heels/boots)
- Personal → sports uniform, band tee, hobby-based outfit
This keeps your gallery interesting without feeling overwhelming.
Stick to tones that photograph well
Neutrals, soft colors, and rich earthy tones always photograph beautifully. Bright colors can work too, but avoid anything neon or overly busy patterns that might distract from you. When in doubt, simpler is better.
Fit > trends
The most important thing? Your clothes fit well. If you’re constantly adjusting, tugging, or feeling uncomfortable, it will show. Choose pieces that flatter your body and let you move naturally.
Don’t forget the details
Accessories, layers, and textures can take an outfit from basic to standout. Think jewelry, hats, denim jackets, or a cozy sweater. Just don’t overdo it – one or two intentional pieces go a long way.
Coordinate with your location
Shooting in a golden field outside Austin? Soft, neutral tones will glow. Heading downtown? You can lean into bolder, trendier looks. Your outfit and location should complement each other, not compete.
Bring options (and trust your photographer)
If you’re unsure, bring a couple extra pieces. I’ll help you choose what works best based on lighting, background, and how everything comes together on camera.
At the end of the day, the best outfit is the one that makes you feel confident the second you put it on. When you feel good, it shows and that’s what makes your photos stand out.
